The sentence for editor-in-chief of the “Borisovskiye Novosti” Anatol Bukas is expected to be pronounced June 15 after 10.00 a.m., as A. Burkas told the public association “Belarusian Journalist Association” after the court session June 13. In his court speech the public prosecutor asked to inflict on A. Burkas the fine of 30 base values as a penalty on articles 188 and 189 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.
November 3, 2004, Barysau public prosecutor V. Shpakouski initiated a suit on the fact of the publication in the newspaper “Borisovskiye Novosti” Anatol Burkas’ article “Star-dolt scamp has a finger in every pie, or the Silence of the lambs”, telling about the editor of the local official newspaper “Adzinstva” Viera Pratasievish. The editor considered Burkas’ article an insult. The “Borisovskiye Novosti” editor’s publication was a reply to 3 publications in the official newspaper that cast aspersions on his personality.

We are continuing to focus our efforts on the Belarusian prisoner of conscience Mikhail Marinich.
We are campaigning for him to receive proper medical treatment, to be permitted to see his family,
and ultimately to be released from prison pending a review of his case. You can help by distributing
our factsheets and letters.
